Synopsis
Early twentieth century New York. Leonie Gilmour, a teacher at a girl's high school, meets Yone Noguchi, a charismatic young poet from Japan. Leonie begins editing his literary works and soon, a romantic relationship develops between the two. However, when Leonie tells Yone that she is pregnant, he flees back to Japan. In hopeless situation, Leonie decides to return to her hometown California and gives birth to a boy, Isamu. As Isamu grows older, their peaceful life becomes tainted by racial discrimination against him, and Leonie decides to cross the Pacific Ocean to Japan, to give her son a better life.

Graduated from Waseda University. After spending time as a journalist she established a company Production If in 1976. In 1985, she established a new company Essen Communications, where she produced many TV programs. In 1998, she debuted as a film director for YUKIE, which was highly recognized at film festivals around the world. In 2002, she directed her second film Oriume.
